Professional Background

Stewart Woodman is a graduate of Sydney University (B.A. Hons 1975) and the Australian National University (Ph.D 1979). He joined UNSW@ADFA early in 2000 to undertake research, teaching and program development in strategic and defence policy and was appointed Foundation Director of the Graduate Studies Institute prior to his present appointment.
Professor Woodman had previously served from 1980 to 1990 as a senior policy officer in Strategic Policy and Planning in the Department of Defence. He was responsible for developing strategic planning concepts, applying strategic principles to major capabilities proposals and operational planning, and identifying the implications of strategic changes in the Asia-Pacific for Australia’s security. He was one of the principal authors of Australia’s Strategic Planning in the 1990s.
From December 1990, he was a Fellow (Australian Defence) and Director of Graduate Studies at the Strategic and Defence Studies Centre (SDSC), the Australian National University. He taught courses on Australian defence and strategic policy and planning, conducted several modules at the Australian Defence College, Weston Creek, and developed and oversaw a joint Masters program with the Singapore Armed Forces Training Institute.
In recent years, he has assisted several regional countries including Thailand, the Philippines, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, New Zealand, Vanuatu, and Solomon Islands, to conduct strategic planning workshops and prepare major strategic reviews or Defence White Papers.

Research Interests / Projects

Australia’s strategic and defence policy, strategic planning challenges in the 21st century, contemporary issues in strategic studies, and Asia- Pacific security in the new millenium.

He has published widely on strategic issues. These include Australia’s Strategic Dilemmas: Options for the Future (with I. McLachlan, M. O’Connor and D. Woolner), ADSC, Canberra, 1997; “The Coming Revolution: Australia’s Defence in the Twenty-First Century” in D. Ball (ed), Maintaining the Strategic Edge: The Defence of Australia in 2015, SDSC, ANU, 1999; and “Strategies and Concepts” and “Capability and Operational Planning” in J. M. Malik (ed), Australia’s Security in the 21st Century, Allen and Unwin, Sydney, 1999.
