Professional Background
Since arriving in 2003 from the Australian National University, Gavin has taught several courses on international politics, ethnic conflict and global security. Since 2005 he has been teaching a course in Global Security tailored for middle ranking officers at the Australian Command and Staff College. His previous research examined theoretical and normative debates in contemporary global politics in relationship to territoriality and ethnic conflict. Gavin’s current research explores theoretical debates on transformation in world politics and the policy implications for global security posed by non-state actors and the securitisation of non-military issues.

Gavin has been a consultant and observer to the Australian Army Land Warfare Development Centre on understanding and evaluating the emerging challenges of the new security agenda. Previous consultancies have included work with the Australian Reconciliation Council, and a parliamentary inquiry into the the human rights situation in Burma.
