Professional Background

I have worked as a lecturer in Indonesian Studies at the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UNSW@ADFA, since 2004. I hold PhD and MA degrees in Indonesian Studies and Literature from Leiden University, the Netherlands. At Leiden University, I was involved as a postgraduate researcher and postdoctoral fellow in the research programs Verbal Art in the Audio-Visual Media of Indonesia (1996-2000) and Indonesian Mediations (2001-2003). I have several years of fieldwork experience in Java, Bali and Sumatra. I also studied at the Indonesian Institute of Arts (ISI) in Yogyakarta (1994-1995) and Andalas University in Padang (1992).

Research Interests / Projects

The central theme of my present and past research projects has been cultural and artistic strategies and media initiatives that constitute alternatives to hegemonic political or commercial discourses and practices.

In my current research, I use the notion of ?media ecology? to explore the ever more complex relationship between people and their information and communication environments. I specifically focus on forms of tele-visual culture, including grassroots media and digital art, which attempt to break through the dominant paradigm of Indonesian national television, promote media literacy, and provide new ethical and aesthetic frameworks for media presentation and representation.

My latest book, From Monologue to Dialogue: Radio and Reform in Indonesia (KITLV Press, 2009), analyses how radio journalism has contributed to the democratization of contemporary Indonesian society by giving a space to civil society to express its thoughts and feelings in the public sphere.

I am also author of Cultural Travel and Migrancy: The Artistic Representation of Globalization in the Electronic Media of West Java (KITLV Press, 2004; KITLV-LP3ES, 2006 [Ind. transl.]), which analyses how artists in West Java use local media, language and culture as strategic tools to re-negotiate the impact of national and global socio-political forces.

I have co-edited a book Cosmopatriots: On Distant Belongings and Close Encounters (Rodopi, 2007), which focuses on the way in which Asian artists and communities in various parts of the world use sexuality, space, the body and race to mediate alternative notions of cosmopolitanism and patriotism.
